Our House Pets

While living in Washington DC, Sophie had a miniature poodle, and after moving to Ridgecrest we continued that practice. However in 1991 while at Wonderland-Boston, Sophie's Nephew, Bob, offered us "Jaslyn Amber" a retired brindle brood matron which was on a farm in Kansas. Transport for Jaslyn was arranged to Phoenix and a friend and I flew from Ridgecrest in his Cessna to bring a very pregnant, and I might add flatulent, Jaslyn to our nearby pistachio farm.

We raised several litters over the next 6-7 years and at one time had as many as 60 greyhounds on the farm. In those days we were active in greyhound adoption and often paid to have our retired or unsuccessful greyhound racers returned to our farm where we found good homes for them.

Meet our couch potatoes: Abby on the left and Alta on the right. (When I was
whelping the greyhound litters I named them alphabetically as they were born.)

The first ritual of the day is jockeying for couch space.  Alta on the right and Abby on
the left have the run of the house and, when in Ridgecrest, they use the same
“doggie door” that we installed for our miniature poodles years ago.

Alta, was born on the farm and decided early that she did not want to be a racer. After two failed adoptions (not her fault), she became our house pet.

After a career as a AA racer in Palm Beach, Abby, aka “Racing Bug” was destined to become a brood matron in Texas. When her owner, Sophie’s nephew Bob, heard that we had lost our original greyhound pet, he offered Abby as a replacement.

Abby often lies on her back. Greyhounds have a lot of leg to tuck under their belly.
Abby was born on the farm and reared and trained by Dick.

Abby just loves that couch, and there is constant bickering between Abby, Alta
and Sophie as to who is going to occupy it.
Sophie usually wins.

Meet the newest greyhound in the Dodge family. This is Nancy Renee and she lives with our grandson Michael and his parents Mike and Katie Danko.

Michael and Nancy Renee live in Lexington Park, MD. Nancy Renee came from Last Lap Greyhound Connection. Numerous greyhound adoption centers are found in all parts of the country.

Nancy Renee and Michael had a number of her friends over for a Halloween party.
Nancy seems to be quite a party girl.
