Sophie and Dick moved to Ridgecrest CA in the summer of 1976. Prior to the move Sophie and Dick lived in Herndon VA. The Ridgecrest move was a career change from the "inside the Beltway" careers of both of us. Sophie had been an employee of the American Institute of Biological Sciences for 19 years prior to the move and Dick was Head of the Education and Communications Department of the same institution. Dick was offered the position of Dean of Instruction at Cerro Coso Community College and Sophie willingly followed. For Dick it was a return to the state of his birth, upbringing and former employment. For Sophie it was the introduction to a totally new life style and many would say culture. A caveat of the move was that we would return to visit her family and Mother at least once a year. That was a commitment that Dick willingly accepted and agreed to and 27 years later to make Seabrook, New Hampshire their retirement residence. The fact that most of the often extended summer visits to New England were in the family beach cottage, which is a few blocks south of our present Seabrook abode. Sophie and Dick continue to be much involved in many activities as well as the continuation of Sophie's Ownership of SASS and Dick's continued operation and development of SAAD Farms, which in addition to growing pistachios, is the location of Dick's applied ecology and arid lands research activities as well as the headquarters of Ecology Consultants Associated. The Dodges have made the move to Seabrook New Hampshire and our Ridgecrest home has been sold. Dick and Sophie expect to be frequent visitors to the Indian Wells Valley as we continue to serve our many clients and friends in this region. We both expect to continue our business and research activities in Ridgecrest and our address will be in care of SASS. Janis Bottorff is managing the business for Sophie and we are in frequent contact by phone, internet and email. It is our hope as well as Janis' that she will soon become the CEO of SASS or whatever. SAAD Farms in Inyokern is still in operation under the excellent management of Dale Barbee. I am still working at the farm in the Spring for a few weeks for budding, replanting and general maintenance and repair and upkeep. Ecology Consultants Associated is still an active company and I am serving former clients as well as working with regional development projects on an as needed basis. SASS serves as an administrative contact for both SAAD Farms and Ecology Consultants Associated.
It is expected that this page will be under construction for some time
and will contain issues of our current interests in this region of
California.
